සිංහලයේ අවසන් අග නගරය වු ලක්දිව කන්ද උඩරට මහනුවර හන්තාන බහිරවකන්ද වැනි කඳු පාමුල පිහිටි ස්වභාව සෞන්දර්යයේ කදිම නිර්මාණයකි. ඉපැරණි රජ මාලිගා සංකීර්ණය ආසන්නයේ ඇති උඩවත්ත කැලේ සුන්දර වන පියසෙකි. පේරාදෙණිය පාලම පසු කළ විට නෙත ගැටෙන පේරාදෙණිය උද්භිද උද්‍යානය මනහර සුවඳ මලින් නන් විසිතුරු තුරු වදුලින් ගහණය. එය දෙස් විදෙස් නරඹන්න්ගේ නෙත් සිත් පිනවන මනෝඥ වු මල් උයනකි. නගරය වට කොට ගලා බසින මහවැලි නදිය හා නගරය මධ්‍යයේහි ඇති කිරි සයුර නම් වු නුවර වැව නගරයේ ස්වාභාවික විචිත්‍රත්වය වඩාත් අසිරිමත් කරවයි.

පැරණියේදී ශ්‍රී සෙංඛණ්ඩ ශෛලාභිධාන ශ්‍රී වර්ධනපුරය වශයෙන් හැඳින්වු මෙම නගරය පසු කලෙක කන්ද උඩරට මහනුවර වශයෙන් ප්‍රකට විය. මුහුදු මට්ටමින් මීටර් 488.6 ක පමණ උසින් පිහිටියේය. කොළඹ සිට කි.මී. 119 ක් පමණ දුරය. සෞම්‍ය දේශගුණයෙන් හා රමණීය පරිසරයකින් හෙබි මෙම නගරය කෘෂිකාර්මික ජීවිතයට අවශ්‍ය ජලයෙන් ද ස්වභාවික රැකවරණයෙන්ද යුක්තය.

සෙංකඩගලපුරය මුලින්ම ගම්පළ රජ කළ තුන්වෙනි වික්‍රමබාහු (ක්‍රි.ව.1357-1374) රජු විසින් පිහටවුවායැයි කියැවෙන අතර, එය රාජධානියක් වශයෙන් ප්‍රතිෂ්ඨාපනය කරනු ලැබුවේ පළමුවෙනි විමලධර්මසුරිය (ක්‍රි.ව. 1592-1604) රජතුමා විසිනි. ශ්‍රී වික්‍රම රාජසිංහ (ක්‍රි.ව.1798 – 1815) රාජ සමයෙහි මහනුවර රාජධානියේ අවසානය උදා විය.

මහනුවර නගරයේ පුජනීයත්වය ශ්‍රී විභුතිය හා ඓතිහාසිකත්වය මුලු ලොවටම කියාපාන අතිපුජනීය ශ්‍රී දංෂ්ඨා ධාතු මන්දිරය, මල්වතු අස්ගිරි උභය මහා විහාරය, නාථ, විෂ්ණු. කතරගම, පත්තිනි යන සිව්මහා දේවාල, රාජ මාලිගා සංකීර්ණය වැනි ස්මාරක මුල්කොට ලෝක උරුම නගරයක් බවට පත්විය. මහනුවර නගරය අවට ඇති අනෙකුත් ඓතිහාසික ස්මාරක අතර, ලංකාතිලකය, ගඩලාදෙණිය, ගංගාරාමය, සුදුහුම්පොල, දෙගල්දොරුව හා කුණ්ඩසාලේ යන විහාරයන් මුල්තැන් ගනී.

උඩරටටම ආවේණික වු වාස්තු විද්‍යාත්මක ලක්ෂණ වලින් අනුන වු ඉපැරණි ගොඩනැගිලි, විසිතුරු කැටයම්, සිතුවම් නර්තනාදී කලා ශිල්ප මෙම නගරයේ සංස්කෘතික මහාර්ඝත්වය ලොවටම කියා පාන්නේය.

Kandy (Ancient Senkadagala) is the last capital of the Sinhala Monarchy the History of which goes back to at least five centuries before the beginning of the Common Era. The city is surrounded by a ring of mountain ranges and Sri Lanka’s largest river Mahaweli Ganga.Kandy enjoys a salubrious climate and still breathes the ancient lifestyle of the people.

Today, Kandy is a city of many attractions. Its natural beauty with misty mountains, verdant slopes, landscapes with urban rain forests consorted by a congenial climate with temperatures ranging from 20-25C around the year.

The heritage of Kandy, Architecture, Sculpture, painting, Dance and Music, all such cultural traditions are endemic to Sri Lanka.Kandy remains the home for all denominations of major world religions. Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and there subdivisions. Buddhism plays a significant role in Kandy with the two main Monastic orders, Malwatte and Asgiriya fraternities together with numerous temples of the Country attached to them.

The Temple of the Scared Tooth Relic constitutes the premier Buddhist Institution of Sri Lanka and remains the cynosure of the world Buddhist and is a great tourist attraction. It is the highest venerated religious center with a very long cultural heritage. And recognition of the sacred temple it has been declared Kandy as a World Heritage City by UNESCO.

The annual pageant (Esala Perahera) constitutes the greatest religious festival of Sri Lanka which attract thousands of pilgrims as well as tourists from all over the world. The Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakitha Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter of Sri Lanka passed away this morning

The Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakitha Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter of Sri Lanka passed away this morning at the Mount Elizabeth Orchard Hospital, Singapore.

The Most Ven Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakitha Mahanayake Thero arrived in Singapore last month and was being treated at the Mount Elizabeth Orchard Hospital since Then.

As instructed by H.E. President Maithripala Sirisena, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, Minister of Buddha Sasana and Hon Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Forign Affairs, the Acting High Commissioner of the Sri Lanka High Commission, Singapore, Mr Wishawanth Aponsu along with staff of the High Commission attended to all the formalities and the remains of the Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero was placed at the official residence of the High Commissioner at No.76 Andrew Road, Singapore from 2.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m today.

Around 30 Buddhist Priests in Singapore paid their lasts respects to the Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero Buddhists in Singapore and Diplomatic Corps too paid their last respects to the Most Ven Mahanayake Thero.

The Acting High Commissioner has also make all arrangements and remains of the Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero will be flown to Sri Lanka tonight, 8^th April 2015 on flight UL 309 at 1950 hrs.
